Gig on the Grass Podcasts

It's arrived - the Gig on the Grass is here. Unfortunately this morning it's not clear whether the sunshine has arrived, too. Nevertheless, the mgsPodcasters will be launching at least two podcasts today kind of live from the Gig. The first one will be up before lunchtime with the work of the pupils from the last three weeks, including all the news of their press visits in recent times.

Apple Malaysia interested in the mgsPodcast

For some unknown reason Apple, the people who make the computers on which we produce the podcasts, have published news of the pupils' achievements on their Malaysian News site.

If you have any idea how or why, do let us know!

mgsPodcast on BBC Newsround

The mgsPodcasters featured on Thursday's BBC Newsround programme, and three were chosen to be the 'Press Pack', giving the report to camera. The crew were in the school for THREE hours filming the slot, which lasted around 2 minutes in the final cut. The press pack report can be seen on the Newsround Press Pack site.

Also featured were some of the pupils who have been preparing, in French, to create their own tourist podcasts to help visitors to Musselburgh find their way around.

It was disappointing for some pupils, though, who didn't get on the telly this time. Never mind. There will be TWO podcasts this week, including one from the Gig on the Grass.

MacWorld and Google news

If you had your eye on Google news and MacWorld today you will have seen that mgsPodcast's NSNM Award has grabbed some headlines:

mgsPodcast - SHORTLISTED for New Media Award

The New Statesman, Britain’s leading political magazine, in association with Atos Origin, the leading IT services company, announces the short listing of the mgsPodcast in their New Media Awards in the category of Innovation.

The key themes of this year’s awards are "ingenuity, modernisation and accessibility". They intend to award those who have achieved something of benefit to others, whether in their community or in society at large. Since 1998, these awards have promoted projects that embrace new technology, fresh thinking and creative management in the UK.

“Society has always been promised a great deal by the digital revolution,” says John Kampfner, editor of the New Statesman. “The 2005 New Media Awards will highlight the projects that have really delivered on that promise.”

“We are absolutely delighted to be short listed for this award,” says Ewan McIntosh, Modern Languages Teacher and web coordinator at Musselburgh Grammar School. "It's a great achievement for the pupils who are, after all, the ones doing the hard work of putting everything together.

"Hopefully, if we can win the award, we will be able to convince more and more teachers to use podcasts as a way of teaching and get more pupils engaging in their education. There are already thousands of subscribers to the show. That can only be a small sign of things to come."

mgsPodcast hits the headlines

Have you seen or heard the mgsPodcast on the news recently?

We featured on last Friday night's Arts Show on BBC Radio Scotland - a NINE minute special featuring Hassan, Amy, Alison and Nicole. It showed people how to podcast as well as featuring some original backing music by Jamie L, or Beatmaster J as he is now known!

We have also featured in the past month in the Times Educational Supplement, the Sunday Express (double-page spread) and are going to perhaps feature in the Guardian and on the TV. Watch this space.
