Function Of Musselburgh
It was 60 years ago when Musselburgh was a fishing village. Musselburgh was small with a few houses. Its main source of money was from the fish. Most of the men were fishermen who had boats in the harbour and their wives made the nets. Everyday the men would go to sea and bring back fish and mussels then sell them on the stalls or to larger companies. Musselburgh real connection with Edinburgh until Edinburgh started to expand. Over the years Edinburgh grew and grew and more people wanted to work there. Eventually people needed to stay in the surrounding towns like Musselburgh. This was when Musselburgh stopped being a fishing village.
Over the years Musselburgh has expanded and now around 20,000 people live here with 60 to 70% commuting to Edinburgh and surrounding cities. Most of the people who live here cant afford properties in Edinburgh so use Musselburgh as a commuting town. This is why Musselburgh went from a fishing village to a busy town.
