Zabrze is the one of the five biggest cities in the Silesian voivodeship, located in the western part of this region. The History of this city begun in the 13th century. In 1922 the agglomeration of agriculture villages and factory settlements obtained the civic rights.
The evelopment of mining, heavy industry and housing, and the attachment of northern and southern districts to the city have given Zabrze the current shape. Today, after thw reduction of extractive industry, the following branches are dominating: chemical, electrical and engineering, building. Also the network of services is rapidly growing.
There are important scientific and environmental protection institutions in Zabrze, e.g. The Coal Chemical Processing Institute, Institute of the Basic Environment Engineering, Institute of Polymers of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Institute of the Heart Prosthesis headed by professor Religa, the Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases and the Silesian Paediatric Centre. The academic education is represented by the Silesian Medical Academy Physician Faculty and Stomatology Faculty, and the Silesian Institute of Technology Management and Organisation Faculty. The secondary schools' network is one of the best in Poland.
Culture amusements and recreation are offered, among others, by the Nowy Theatre, Zabrze Philharmonic, the City Museum, the Coal Mining Museum (unique in Europe Skansen museum), Sports & Events Hall, the Music and Dance House. The following monuments of arts are specially interesting; housing colony in Biskupice, Saint Jadwiga Church, Saint James Church, the water tower and the Jewish cemetery.Also we have got shopping centres and lots of pubs where we spend our free time.
The city offers for investors areas assigned for housing, which have good communication routes to the whole region, and buildings for rent or for sale. It should be mentioned that A-1 and A-4 highways will cross the city and its surroundings. Population - 191462, area - 80 km2
