Hello, we hope you got fun with us.. now we want to to say something about Easter in Poland..We have holidays from Great Thursday to Tuesday after Easter.
Easter with a previous time of fourty-day fast and penance have a particular meaning in christians spiritual life. Death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as central sign of rescue are the occasions to think about our life. Except dominant sacral elements there maintained many pagan customs.
Easter habits and ceremonies begin on Palm Sunday, a week before Easter and end on Tuesday after. At pagan times it was time of spring’s victory. Christianity adopted some of those elements to their traditions, gave them new meaning and symbolism.
On Palm Sunday there is a common habit to bless the palms. The christian tradition joins it with Jesus’ entrance to Jerusalem, who was welcome by Jews by sprigs of a palm, which was a symbol of regenerating life.
Easter knockers substitute church bells from Great Thursday to Great Saturday. Some time ago running boys made a lot of noise by knocking. Except the fun of knocking, knockers had a magic function. Big noise had to frighten away evil, protect people and animals from evil.
Easter eggs – a tradition of painting eggs for Easter goes back far past. As the archeological materials show us easter egg had a big connection with magic and slaws beliefs in the past. It played a great role as a symbol of fertility & regenerating life.
Święcone – that’s the habit well known in Christian’ culture. Its traditional composition includes eggs, bread, salt, cured, Easter lamb, often horseradish. Święcone is decorated by green springs. The food shold be blessed on Great Saturady in churches.
God’s tomb – this custom had remerged in western Europe and along the evolution of liturgy of Paschal triduum. The Custom of making God’s tombs in churches, more rare in western Europe, but always alive in Poland and past the Resuraction is the most important accent of Paschal triduum. It is practised an adoration and a night vigil at tombs.
The hare - it brings the gifts to children on Easter.
The Śmigus Dyngus – consists in spirnkling each other by water. It is celebrated on Monday after Easter, formerly also on Tuesday and following days.
We are expecting to hear from you soon about your traditions.. Greetings and kisses
